International Holocaust Memorial Day

As an educational community, this day calls us to reflect on the consequences of hatred and to reaffirm the importance of dignity, tolerance and human rights for all.
Today, we observe International Holocaust Memorial Day – a time to remember the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, as well as the millions of others oppressed and murdered under Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides. As an educational community, this day calls us to reflect on the consequences of hatred and to reaffirm the importance of dignity, tolerance and human rights for all.
Over the weekend, Adelaide Primary School were invited to take part in a special Holocaust Memorial Day service on behalf of Hull City Council. Staff and pupils joined schools from across the city, alongside speeches from the Lord Mayor and other civic leaders. The theme for this year was “Bridging Generations” and Adelaide Primary concluded the service with a series of thoughtful reflections:
Today, we gather to remember the millions of people who suffered and died during the Holocaust.
We honour their lives and commit to learning from the past, so that hatred and prejudice never win again.
Each of us has a part to play in building a world of kindness and peace.
1. Remembering Names:
Each name tells a story. Each name belonged to someone who laughed, learned and loved.
Today, we speak their names in our hearts so they are never forgotten.
2. A Candle of Hope:
One small candle can light a dark room. One act of kindness can change a life.
Even in the darkest times, there were people who chose hope and helped others.
3. Why We Remember:
We remember because silence allows hate to grow. We remember because every person matters.
We remember so that the world learns that never again should anyone suffer because of who they are.
4. A Child’s Voice:
I imagine a child like me, who loved to play and dream – but whose dreams were taken away.
Today, I speak for them. I promise to stand up for fairness, kindness and peace.
5. Our Promise:
We cannot change the past, but we can shape the future. We promise to speak out against hate, to care for others, and to build a world where everyone belongs.
As we finish, let us remember that the Holocaust teaches us what happens when hate goes unchallenged. We promise to be voices of kindness and courage. Together, we can ensure that “Never Again” is not just a phrase, but a commitment we live by.
Let us hold these values close to our hearts.
