SEND Day 2 Conference: Curriculum That Counts

A day dedicated to shaping the curriculum for pupils with severe learning difficulties.

In partnership with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, we were thrilled to welcome over 80 delegates to the re-run of Day 2 of our SEND Conference on Thursday 23 April. The day focused on shaping meaningful and impactful curriculum experiences for pupils with Severe Learning Difficulties. With this event, we have now delivered our Day 2 training to over 240 delegates!

The day began with a warm welcome from Rachel Wilkes, CEO of Humber Education Trust and Merlin Joseph, Executive Director of Children, Families and Schools at East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Berni Moorcroft, Director of Inclusion, revisited the Fundamentals of Learning and Curriculum Stages for English and Maths, providing a strong and purposeful foundation for the workshops ahead. Networking buzzed throughout the day, creating valuable connections and sharing best practice.

Our workshops were the heart of the day, led by our very talented team – Andrea Powell, Sarah Grindley, Vicky McGuire and Helen Robinson. From developing interaction and engagement, to nurturing early literacy, numeracy, attention and engagement skills, each workshop was packed with practical strategies, live modelling and even a few sing songs along the way! Delegates rotated through every workshop, taking part in hands-on activities and lively discussions as you can see captured in our video below. A huge thank you to the team for making these workshops so visual, insightful and impactful.

The excellent feedback says it all: It was incredibly informative and was full of practical ideas I can take back and use with the pupils in school. The presenters were extremely knowledgeable and it was enjoyable as well as useful.”

Merlin Joseph, Executive Director of children, families and schools said: “It’s great to see so many SEND professionals from schools across the East Riding coming together with a shared commitment to ensure every child can access a curriculum that makes sense to them, meets them where they are and helps them move forward.  One of our biggest strengths is the way we learn from each other; the expertise, questions, and ideas help shape practice across all our schools. Thank you to all of our fantastic teaching staff, and to Humber Education Trust for sharing their expertise, and I hope all involved have come away inspired, and confident in supporting pupils with the most complex needs.

We’re grateful to East Riding Council for subsidising the venue and refreshments, and to our amazing staff and helpers who kept everything running smoothly. Special thanks also goes to Tigers Events at the MKM Stadium for their outstanding hospitality.

Thank you to everyone who made this day so memorable – together, we’re making a real difference.

Where everybody counts, every moment matters.
