It was a real pleasure to once again welcome Emily Rubin, who travelled all the way from the USA to deliver such fantastic training. We were delighted to host over 70 delegates from across the region, all coming together to learn, reflect and collaborate.

The conference was opened by Berni Moorcroft, Director of Inclusion, who set the tone for a day focused on collaboration, reflection and meaningful learning.

We were honoured to have Emily Rubin, co-author of the SCERTS® Model and an experienced speech-language pathologist, lead the sessions. The day centred on the SCERTS® approach (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, Transactional Support), with participants deepening their knowledge and skills in:

• Identifying strategies to mentor multidisciplinary team members and enhance learning environments for active engagement
• Applying practical tools to identify a learner’s developmental stage in expressive communication and language
• Writing evidence-based goals that highlight the role of the interactive partner
• Embedding meaningful goals across a learner’s natural routines at school, at home and in other settings

Emily’s passion for the connection between social-emotional engagement, language, learning and wellbeing shone throughout the day. Reflecting on her return to Hull, Emily shared:

“It was a pleasure to return to Hull for Day 2 of the SCERTS® training and to experience such a warm welcome once again. The energy, insight and depth of the questions and discussions highlighted how deeply the region’s educators are committed to supporting social-emotional engagement for all learners. I feel so optimistic and confident that these approaches will continue to make a powerful and lasting impact across the Humber region.”

We were pleased to have InVentry attend with their sign in system and to also welcome Evoke Technologies, who showcased their ActiveFloor and SportsWall, bringing an extra element of fun and friendly competition to the day!

Delegates were highly engaged throughout, contributing enthusiastically to discussions and Padlet polls. The opportunity to network was particularly valued, with many attendees sharing ideas, experiences and building new professional connections. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with one delegate commenting:

“My most valuable takeaway from the day was all of it! Thank you for such excellent training.”

To close the day, Berni Moorcroft offered a heartfelt thank you to Emily for travelling such a long distance to deliver this exceptional conference. We also extend our sincere thanks to all staff and volunteers who ensured everything ran smoothly and to the fantastic team at MKM Stadium for their warm hospitality.
